TEASER #4: LIFE
I found this from the clips I sneaked out of the editing room. I hope my editor doesn’t see this.

Check out the TRAILER and OTHER TEASERS at the bottom of this post!!!

TEASER #3: ART
My editor kicked me out of the studio, so I stole some footages. This one is for all the artists in the world!
More to come. Enjoy!

This is the first set of footage to be used as a guide for the trailer. I am aware of the technical issues/typos and will correct them on the final cut.

My apologies to Paul Pope for cutting off his credits.

Thanks to Alabama 3  for their music.

In his four decades as a painter and graphic artist, Jeffrey Jones has followed a unique path—one which began in the lowbrow realms of pulp novels and comic books in the early 1970s. In those lean years of economic stagnation and artistic experimentation, Jones and other pop culture visionaries helped to light the fuse for the creative explosion in American comics that would bring the world such classics as Watchmen, V for Vendetta, The Sandman, 300 and Love and Rockets. In this new documentary, a host of comics industry pioneers shares their memories of this vital time with a focus on Jones and his work, which continues to inspire fellow artists and fans alike.

The documentary features not only comic book artists but other comics industry professionals as well. Jones’s life and work are the highlights, but the effects of art—on an individual, on society, and as a business—are also discussed. How important and influential is art? Can it really save a person’s life, as its practitioners claim? How did it evolve from pure decoration to a commercial commodity? All of these questions will be examined as we explore the world of Jeffrey Jones.

The story of art is, in the end, the story of artists, and the whole can also be seen
in its parts.

  1. Man, I cannot WAIT for this…the production looks wonderful. You probably already know to reduce the volume of the music…sometimes the voices are lost, thus the emphasis is lost. But boy, this looks soooo good!

  2. Great to be able to see this. Great to see the speaker’s credited so clearly – thanks
How will you sell this in Europe?

    • Actually, my crew works for the BBC UK in Belfast. They told me that once the film is made, we are going to try and approach BBC about it. But who knows, at present, I’m just focusing to get the movie done. Thanks.

  3. Looks fantastic and I can’t wait until it’s done. Small criticism though, the music needs to be potted down a little so you can hear the speakers. Music’s there to make a point, not hit you over the head with it.

  4. this is so appreciated-

  5. Good lord! This is superb! Very much looking forward to this. In appearance it looks to be a cinematic representation of what I had hoped to achieve with my magazine, COMIC BOOK ARTIST. Maybe someday I can come half-way there in comparison to this documentary. Bravo…

  6. Looks great. Lets hope it does get an airing in the UK. IF it doesnt get picked up by a network it would be great to have it screened at t he Comic Cons in the UK.

  7. Hi, I just found this and am very interested in its development and what your doing. Looks fascinating, and some of the shots are beautiful. But as others have said, please please consider ‘better things’ for the music.

I don’t believe it’s just the volume, the choice of song is hugely jarring. The modern pacey tune against the contemplative shots of traditionalist imagery, the use of a heavily lyrically driven piece against trying to follow dialogues and thought processes, the cowboy evocations not relating to the images – all massively jarring. I honestly thought I had a pop-up playing somewhere. Please consider something else, preferably not at all lyrical. I strongly feel you are letting down otherwise excellent work. x

    • Thanks for your comments, I appreciate them. If you’ve followed the thread of comments about my musical inclinations, you would see that this has always been one of my challenges :) But don’t worry, this has been well taken into consideration and will not be as jarring in the future.

  8. Just got clued in to this from James Gurney’s BLOG…This looks fascinating. What is the projected finish date?

    • We’re aiming to release the film this year. Sorry, no exact dates yet, we’re still in post production.

  9. Incredible work so far and looks hugely inspiring… Thank you so much for the effort in putting a project like this together. I’m sure it’ll be a pleasure for artists to revisit for yeeears to come… Keep at it!

  11. Just finding this, now, I hope that the project can still go ahead. A most apt fragment on the top – perhaps a consolation of sorts.

  14. I am very saddened by this news Maria, I am in no position to organise something like this but I think it would be great if a Jeff Jones Tribute project could be initiated by fellow artists and proceeds of prints/ a book sold could go to finishing this wonderful documentary?

  15. Nice work, great artist. Might I suggest you send your rough cut to Michelle Carey the Artistic Director of the Melbourne International Film Festival (Australia), in a few months time.

MIFF don’t fund the completion of films, or screen rough cuts, but they are the biggest and most influential festival in the Southern Hemisphere and have been responsible for getting plenty of docs like yours a distribution deal. ‘Frazetta: Playing With Fire’, to make a comparison, was picked up for TV and DVD after its MIFF screening.

With Cannes finishing tomorrow, MIFF’s programme is wrapped up for this year. Send them the cut you have around October 2011 after they’re back from Toronto.

Also try ABC and SBS-TV, or Madman Distribution in Australia, when you have a cut closer to final. Good luck with the BBC as well, it looks like their kind of thing

    cheers,
    Brett Woodward

    • I will, thanks for the leads. I’m still continuing to edit the film this June, aiming to get it done by September.

  16. Poignant, fresh, humorous, real, informative……I am not an artist…..I love what I’ve seen…..the point is, you can reach out beyond!

  17. Let’s get this film out! Any idea of a official release date? Can’t wait.. looks great!

  18. I’m playing catch-up here. I only found out last night that Jeff Jones had passed away. I am still shocked at that. I had this mental image of him still beavering away at whatever kind of work he had chosen. I was completely unaware of his gender transition, also. I read elsewhere that he had found the move less than ideal; I don’t know – for some it works, for others it may simply compound issues they can’t resolve.
Anyway, I have ended up on this site via the Comics Reporter. I have viewed the clips – loved the outtakes. You should include them in the final cut, alongside the credits. I have to agree with other comments regarding the music used in the trailer – wrong choice, way too loud and lyrics over the top of spoken word? Never! Docos don’t really need music, anyway, but maybe something more ambient like Brian Eno would be appropriate? I see most of the comments were made last year, so I assume things have moved forward in a positive way since then? I loved the segments and I hope this film takes off. Someone mentioned the Melbourne Film Festival and I second that suggestion. Also the Auckland International Film Festival (New Zealand). Contact Bill Gosden. They don’t do funding or anything, but I know they would love to screen a film like this in their documentary section.
Good luck. I will stay tuned to this site.
And to Jeffrey Catherine Jones – gone too soon. Rest in Peace.
